Health + the Local Health District
Health
One Mid North Coast Local Health District spans all five councils, with
base hospitals at Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Kempsey and district hospitals through
the valleys. We track it through the district's own news and Health Infrastructure NSW's
project pages: the Coffs Harbour Health Campus expansion and the Kempsey Hospital
redevelopment, workforce and emergency-department demand, and flood-service continuity.
Dollar figures and project status are verified on the agency's own
pages before we cite them, and development applications are read from the councils and the
NSW Planning Portal. Where a story turns on numbers it carries a methodology note.

A four-storey inpatient building, an expanded emergency department,
new maternity and neonatal units, and mechanical systems work across a hospital opened in
1994. What the page says, and the one thing it does not: when any of it arrives.

Six district releases between 1 July and 4 August, added up. A
prostate biopsy rig, a paediatric day chair, an oxygen device that keeps newborns in the
region, and two auxiliary annual meetings. What the arithmetic earns is a question.

Brendan Walsh takes the chair. The district's own release records the
previous chair finishing in late 2025 and the deputy serving as interim through the first
half of 2026.

The $194 million Coffs Harbour hospital expansion is complete: a
four-level clinical services building with an expanded emergency department, more theatres,
more critical-care and inpatient beds. But the state's more recent move here is not more
clinical space, it is $5.5 million for health-worker accommodation, part of a $200.1 million,
four-year program targeting more than 500 workers across regional NSW. A read of how the
binding constraint moved from the building to the workforce.
